This icon is in the Gate of Dawn (Ostra Brama) in Vilnius, Lithuania. It is one of the icons held in great veneration by Catholics and Orthodox alike. It was originally called the Chersonesus icon, after the place in Crimea where it had been before. The icon shows the Mother of God at the moment of the Annunciation, contemplating the mystery of the miraculous conception of the Saviour in her womb. The Mother of God is shown with downcast eyes and hands folded on her breast. Her head is adorned with a double crown and a halo, and rays and stars spread out around it.
