description
The Vladimir Mother of God is of the type known as Eleousa, or Umileniye (Tenderness). This type has been known since the 8th century. It shows Mary pressing her cheek to her Son’s cheek. The head of the Mother of God is inclined slightly towards Jesus, and He puts His arm around her neck. This icon is filled with great lyricism. It is not only an image of the tender closeness of Mother and Son, but is at the same time one of the most mystical types of Marian icon.
how it was made
The icon was made at the icon-writing workshops in Falenica. Given to a family friend. Now – somewhere in Poland...
